Famous Fictional Spacecraft
Spacecraft has always been portrayed in fiction right back to the early comics of Buck Rogers in the 21st century, which was a comic book series of the 1930’s. Lost in Space was a popular television series in the 1960’s that featured the Jupiter 11 Landing Module. This was a flying saucer that the Robinson family used to explore space. The flying saucer has always been associated with alien spacecraft right down to the magical broom used by Harry Potter. Other fictional spacecraft that many people are familiar with include:
• Andromeda Spacecraft: The spacecraft depicted in this series included the Andromeda Assistant, which had its own artificial intelligence, Glorious Heritage and the DSX, which were part of the High Guard Fleet. Another spacecraft of this fleet was the Eureka Maru, which was a cargo ship armed with lasers and missiles.
• Babylon 5: In this television series that started in 2002, there are numerous kinds of spacecraft capable of many different functions.
• Battlestar Galactica: The spaceships used in this series were the equivalent of airship carriers equipped with laser turrets, forward lasers and anti-ship missiles.
• Star Wars: The shuttles and spacecraft used in this series featured elements borrowed from the design of different rockets and shuttles and combined into more powerful spaceships.
• Star Trek: The Enterprise is the most famous of the Star Trek spacecraft that had the capability of conducting long range space exploration.
While there are many facets of these fictional spacecraft that do mirror the development of spacecraft used in space exploration, producers and directors are limited only by their imaginations. Writers can have the spaceships behave in any way they wish whether it is actually possible or not. Through animation and technology, these spaceships can be brought to life so that they look very realistic. Many of the spacecraft depicted in stories and film are based on actual rockets and space probes.
