A group of astronomers from NASA, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and other organizations had a front row seat to observe the Hayabusa spacecraft's fiery plunge into Earth's atmosphere. The team flew aboard NASA's DC-8 airborne laboratory, packed with cameras and other imaging instruments, to capture the high-speed re-entry over an unpopulated area of central Australia on June 13, 2010. The Japanese spacecraft completed its seven-year, 1.25 billion mile journey to return a sample of the asteroid Itokawa.

The joint NASA/Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales Topex/Poseidon oceanography satellite ceased operations after nearly 62000 orbits of Earth. The spacecraft lost its ability to maneuver, bringing to a close a successful 13-year mission. Topex/Poseidon data have helped in hurricane and El Nino/La Nina forecasting, ocean and climate research, ship routing, offshore industries, fisheries management, marine mammals' research, modernizing global tide models and ocean debris tracking. The satellite's pitch reaction wheel, which helps keep the spacecraft in its proper orbital orientation, stalled on October 9, and ground controllers concluded the wheel was not functioning. The satellite remains in...

NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, spacecraft has made it possible for scientists to construct the first comprehensive sky map of our solar system and its location in the Milky Way galaxy. The new view will change the way researchers view and study the interaction between our galaxy and sun.

This compilation of video shows some of the first imagery and data sent back from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Most of the imagery comes from SDO's AIA instrument, and different colors are used to represent different temperatures, a common technique for observing solar features. SDO sees the entire disk of the Sun in extremely high spacial and temporal resolution and this allows scientists to zoom in on notable events like flares, waves, and sunspots. Enjoy the imagery and post in the comments the parts you found most captivating. To learn more about the SDO mission, visit: sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov To find these videos for download, check out www.nasa.gov svs.gsfc.nasa.gov Launched on...

An introduction to Snow Labs' Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), UAV's, SUAV's, and the X-GEN-M (Micro). Conceptual overview of combat capacities to the modified TREX-600 platform. The Merlin X-1 units are meant to be small squadrons of UAV's set into high altitude, stealthy pattern hold. We target global range and near unlimited flight time -- certainly in weeks and months; Later in years as systems are refined near-term. These fuel-less power systems can greatly enable "eyes in the sky" and also hunter/ killer missions. Our first Merlin X-1 is designed around at least 2 shots of 00 buck and 100 grams of high explosive (land mine whalup). Larger platforms can pack a bigger punch, but we favor...

This is the final (willing or not) say about ET existence in the Universe. No more lies or speculations. NASA control room with big screen and Crew of Shuttle Discovery confirms what's real. These historical words; "...Houston, this is Discovery, we still have the ALIEN SPACECRAFT under observance..." are unrevealing more than 50 years of lies and deceiving. NASA and SETI have nothing to look for anymore. There are many Intelligences present in the Universe and more than one in our Solar System alone (we are plus the others). Close this chapter. Go for real scientific study on this subject by WHOLE WORLD SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY. Inquisition died hundreds of years ago; THERE IS NOTHING TO BE...

X-37B OTV-1 (Orbital Test Vehicle 1) is an American unmanned spacecraft, in what will be the maiden flight of the Boeing X-37B. The spacecraft will be placed into low Earth orbit for testing, then it will be de-orbited for landing. The landing is to occur on a runway at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California with Edwards Air Force Base as the alternate site. The duration of the mission has not been announced, although an Air Force spokesperson has said the vehicle has a requirement to be on-orbit for up to 270 days.

Return to the moon Orbiter to map lunar surface BY STEPHEN CLARK SPACEFLIGHT NOW Posted: April 23, 2008 A robotic precursor of resuming human expeditions to the moon will likely be postponed by at least a few weeks from its October launch target, but NASA does not foresee any problems launching the lunar orbiter and high-speed impactor before the end of this year NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, an observatory to map the lunar surface in search of potential landing sites for future human missions, is about two weeks behind schedule in meeting the craft's appointed launch date, said Craig Tooley, LRO project manager at the Goddard Space Flight Center. "We know that there are things that...

On March 31, 1989 headlines informed that Phobos 2, before losing contact, captured some strange photos of an unidentified object. Phobos 2 operated normally during its cruise phase, travelling the millions of miles from the Earth to Mars with no mechnical problems. It successfully gathered data about the Sun, Earth, Mars, and the interplanetary medium. On March 27, 1989, as it approached within 50 meters of the moon Phobos, it was set to drop a mobile "hopper" lander and a stationary platform. But just before doing so, contact was mysteriously lost.
